PROFILE
Born in Aichi Prefecture. Graduated from Kyoto City University of Arts (M.A.) She has brought in “Katazome”, one of the very traditional dyeing methods in Japan, to the world of painting, and has created new contemporary art. She has won 19 prizes including “Kyoto Arts New Artist Prize” and “Urban Culture Incentive Award” in 2003. Visits to Vietnam in 1994 and onwards have brought about drastic changes in her art style. Changing sceneries of Vietnam have become main theme, and she has created many art works in a grand scale. In 2003, special exhibitions of her major 26 art works were held in Vietnam and Japan in commemoration with the 30th Anniversary of the Establishment of Japan-Vietnam Diplomatic Relations. In 2005, the exhibition “Playing Eternal Music of Heart in the Old City, Hue” was held at the Royal Palace in Hue, a famous World Heritage designated historic place in Vietnam. That year, she was awarded the “Cultural Testimonial Award” by the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. She has produced other art works depicting sceneries of Myanmar and Morocco. In 2007, “Memory of Time—Toba Mika Katazome Exhibition” at Furukawa Art Museum“, Scenes of Vietnam—Far and Distant View” at Pola Museum Annex Tokyo IN Ginza, and special selection exhibition at Togo Seiji Museum were held. In 2008, first art work depicting Japanese scenery 、”Flies into the Blue sky in a Crisp Morning" was produced, and together with the following art work"Dawn”is being exhibited on a permanent basis at Nihonbashi Mitui Tower. In 2010, “in commemoration of Heijo-Nara 1300th and Hanoi 1000th Anniversary, “Toba Mika’s Exhibition—Nara and Hanoi bound together with Katazome” was held at Yakusiji temple in Nara and at the Temple of Literature and National museum of Art in Hanoi. NEW! “Toba Mika Exhibition---Journey to the Dawn” ends with a great success
The special exhibition “Toba Mika Exhibition---Journey
to the Dawn “comes to a finale with a great success. The exhibition
started in May ends on July 3rd 2011, and was enjoyed by the great
number of attendance. It was held at Tamesaburo Annex of Furukawa
Museum in Nagoya, and the Annex was a beautiful Japanese house
with Sukiyadukuri, a traditional artistic Japanese house incorporating”
tea-house” style.
Toba Mika’s paintings with Katazome method are big in scale, some
with the size of 5×3 meter, and matched nicely with the house,
and created a wonderful space.
“Crisp Nishinokyo” which was dedicated to Yakusiji Temple in March
2011 was exhibited with many other paintings depicting changing
Vietnamese scenery.

<Spring of Nara>
Dedication of “Crisp Nishino-kyo” to Yakusiji Temple
On March 31st 2011, Toba Mika dedicated her art work” “Crisp Nishino-kyo” at the occasion of Hanaesiki ceremony which has one thousand year’s old long history. This art work depicted cherry blossomed Yakusiji temple was produced for the special exhibition “Toba Mika Exhibition—Nara and Hanoi bound together with Katazome” to celebrate Nara-Heijo1300th and Hanoi1000th year. It is a great honor for her to dedicate this art work to Yakusiji Temple. The dedication ceremony was taken place in front of the national treasure designated Yakusi-Sanzon statutes at the time of Hanaesiki on a beautiful spring day.

In the autumn of 2010, in commemoration of the 1000th anniversary of the founding of Hanoi and 1300th anniversary of Nara Heijo-kyo capital, “Toba Mika’s Exhibition----bringing together Nara and Hanoi with Katazome” will be held at the Temple of Literature and the Vietnam National Museum of Art in Hanoi, and at Yakusiji temple in Nara. At Yakusiji-temple, Toba Mika’s art works will be exhibited next to the National Treasure Buddha statue, and will create a wonderful harmony.
